Fleet 8 goes International for the 2007 Moose Regatta

Time to dust off your sails and boards because it’s time for the Moose Regatta! The Northwest Ontario Windsurfing Club (N.O.W.) along with Fleet8 welcome you to Dryden, Ontario Canada for an unforgettable adventure. Our “Wilderness City” is located in the heart of Canada, in beautiful Sunset Country.

The Moose Regatta is a fun filled event with focus on our entry level sailors, but still challenging enough for those who want to test their skills against some of the best sailors in the Midwest USA and Central Canada. Along with course racing, this years regatta will include a race around Picnic Island. Fun is what we’re all about, and we encourage our kiter friends to also attend this event. There is a beautiful sand beach 200m from the event site for kiter’s to launch from. “Flat Rock Beach” is good in almost all wind directions.

The 2007 Moose Regatta will be held at Sandy Beach Park on Wabigoon Lake. Sandy Beach will be the ideal location for beginners and spectators. With an overlooking view of the lake, grassy rigging area, large sand beach, children’s play center, huge outdoor BBQ shelter, walking trails and a 9 hole golf course 100m from the event site, there will be something for the whole family to do. So make plans for this June 29 – July 1, 2007 to attend the largest Windsurfing Regatta in central Canada!

Along with being a MOWIND point scored event, the 2007 Moose Regatta will also be The Western Ontario Championships as sanctioned by Windsurfing Canada.

Fleet 8 Update: Sept. 24 Blog

Fleet 8 Update: Sept. 24

Within a Week!
We are within a week of the Crossing. Anyone having problems with finding lodging or camping should feel free to contact us. Remember, the last deadline for advanced registration is Monday. Hopefully, everyone received the Official Program. If you don’t get it shortly, please update us with your physical mailing address.

We are happy to announce that the 25th Mille Lacs Crossing will be recorded as a milestone. It has been confirmed that an independent cinematographer and a Twin Cities TV station will each be filming the action, on-the-water and off. We look forward to adding some of this coverage to our website at fleet8.com.

Category Clarification. In addendum to the Notice of Race, Formula class is for equipment that falls within the parameters of the International Formula Class, length 216-281 cm, width 67-100.5 cm and no daggerboard. At check-in, unlimited/open class will be recorded for the purpose of Mowind and/or national scoring. It encompasses Formula and unlimited longboard equipment. Awards for the Crossing will be for the equipment sailed during the Crossing. Hybrids will be scored in the Prodigy class. We hope this clarifies the categories. If you have any questions, please contact us.

Kiters Invited to Compete, but not Cross.
A sincere effort was put forward over the past year to include kiting in the Mille Lacs Crossing format. It has been discussed over by kiters who have windsurfed the Crossing and the more we looked at it, the more the logistics that challenge the windsurfer format create even more of a problem for kiting. With the success of the two winter Kite Crossings, we want kiters to be a part of the 25th Crossing. Not exhibition like in recent years, but actually competing on the water. This will be the first kite competition on water for the kite community that has set the bar for winter contests. Depending on the conditions, kite-cross or world-cup course will allow local talent to display their kite-handling skills. Needless to say, kite competition will not be held during the time of the actual crossing.

The fee for kiters to compete will be $60 which includes the breakfast and banquet on Saturday, and a sweatshirt. The social package for those not competing will be $40 or $18 for just the banquet. These fees are for those electronically registered by Wednesday, with a $15 penalty for those who wait until later.

Fleet 8 Update: September 4, 2006 Blog

Fleet 8 Update: September 4, 2006

Waconia Wind & Wave Pays the Price
Boasting of the best winds over the last six years, Mother Nature responded with parking a high pressure cell over us. Wind direction steadied enough to get off three races Saturday in the late afternoon. Lighter winds would have been welcome with five new arrivals for the workshop fleet, but most of the time there wasn’t enough for them to even sense direction. Most of them tuned their skills on a shortened course and received coaching from the more experienced sailors. Probably the sole benefit of high pressure is that it provided excellent conditions for a shrimp boil on the shores of Lake Minnetonka.

Results: 1. Peter Hartwich 2. Dave Chizek 3. Larry Miller 4. Chris Diller 5. Arnie Cleveland 6. Deb Ukura 7. Priscilla Specht

Workshop Fleet: Allison Diller, Linda Key, Jeanne Hane, Rorah Van Dyke, Rutger Van Huber
Less than 4 Weeks to the 25th Crossing! We have mailed the Notice of Race. If you don’t receive the mailing, please update us with your physical mailing address so we can mail you the Official Program. For those interested in the Classic class, it is open to one-design Windsurfer and Mistral Superlight as well as any stock sailboard from pre-87′.

Anticipation is high and many have already booked lodging. Two resorts are already totally filled and the fishing remains good, so there may be competition for the rest. We have included a list of lodging and camping within 15 minutes of the Garrison race and social sites. Wilderness will be open for camping and we have reserved the front six campsites near the clubhouse. When you call, tell them you are taking one of the sites reserved for the windsurfers. Reserve quickly, we will release the reservation within a week.
